About this piece
The Voice artwork lets you shape tones by moving your cursor across a two-dimensional space of pitch and amplitude. Each significant tone is recorded in a “tone journal” stored locally in your browser. This piece reads that accumulated history and transforms it into a generative composition.
Each stored frequency becomes a voice — a carrier oscillator with FM synthesis modulation that breathes in and out on its own slow rhythm. The modulator creates richer harmonics that shift over time, giving each voice a living, evolving timbre. Voices enter one by one, staggered across time, creating layers that evolve without repeating.
If no tone journal exists, the composition draws from a default harmonic series — a fundamental and its partials. The invitation is the same: sit and listen to an ambient piece that unfolds slowly, each voice rising and falling like breath.
Phase 3 adds touch-responsive interaction: hover your cursor over the canvas while the composition plays. Voices near your cursor respond with richer harmonics and subtly increased volume. Your proximity shapes the sound — not directing it, but influencing it, the way a hand held near a candle shapes the flame without touching it.
